This hatred does not exist in a vacuum. It is fed, every day, by an information campaign unlike anything we’ve seen since the Cold War. Hamas and its allies have mastered the dark art of manipulating digital imagery, fabricating statistics, and weaponising words and emotion. They show the world what war looks like and demand that we call it genocide."
Without about 30 years of the Academia-NGO-Journalism Industrial Complex paving the way for animus towards Israel's existence, Hamas's disinformation campaign wouldn't be anywhere near as effective.
I took am non-Jewish and have been watching in horror as this builds and grows. Glastonbury was remarkably hateful and cheered on by people who could afford a smarter brain
My biggest concern is the universities and what they’re teaching. Israel and the ME has always been a complex set of issues but students have been taught to view it as an overly simplistic oppressor/oppressed scenario. Beyond the absurd simplicity of this view, the lack of any critical thinking or interest in deeper motivations on the part of students is what frightens me the most. A population who complacently swallows one dictated view of the world wholesale and without challenge or thought is a scary place to be. The Jew hatred will always be there but as you say, many are just useful idiots and we can never underestimate the power of human stupidity.
We say, we stand with Israel. More of us need to start being louder. I get abuse in my DMs. We lost our 14 year old German Shepherd Max a while back. On X this was sent to me: 'has your dog rotted yet Zionist?' ( He was cremated) I played along and said 'I should hope so, he's been gone a while' I did report it but heard nothing back. 🙄I'm seeing this vile behaviour a lot more. Now I wonder if it ever really went away.....or was it there bubbling under all along? Are people acting on the misinformation? (I'm certainly no expert, far from it, which is why I'm subscribed to this account) Happy Weekend all 🇬🇧🤝🇮🇱
Sorry for your loss. Losing a beloved dog is devastating. I, too, receive many hateful, despicable messages. I choose to ignore and move on. They probably wouldn't say a thing to me if we were in person, so they're cowards and, in my view, not worth spending another second on.
Thank you. I was lucky to have him for almost 15 years. He was a fine boy. I'm learning to block as I go now, engaging with them is pointless I've found. They have such an ingrained hatred of Israel, it's impossible to penetrate and I certainly don't have the level of expertise to even try. My 'other' DM is full of it. I don't even look anymore.
Say "Absolutely, Hamas committed a genocide not just on the Israelis but also on its own people by using them as human shields, and Israel is fighting that evil." And then if the barman doesn't pipe down, you leave, because seriously why would you want to give him the business.
Beats the hell out of me. Haters gonna hate. I doubt he’d welcome a reasoned challenge.
I am a third generation American Jew, a life long New Yorker. Two degrees from Columbia. A past board member of Columbia/Barnard Hillel.
I am sickened and horrified by the hate and dehumanisation exhibited
I’ve been horrified by the hatred and dehumanisation of Jews exhibited in New York since October 8.
I’d urge people to make an effort to have a community movie theater run showings of H8TE, a powerful documentary. One eye opening section gives an account of a meeting in Philadelphia in 1994 by a group of Arab leaders. The meeting was called to plan a public relations campaign to influence American college students. They succeeded brilliantly. While we slept.
Our social media has become an amplifier of hate and of Jewish people. The hate spun against Americans supporting Israel is now in many feeds. Tik tok especially
I do indeed conflate Zionism with Judaism. There is no Judaism without Zionism. Why are the Jews supposed to be the only people with no right to a nation? Anyone hating on Israel hates Jews, period. Is there any other country on earth in which its very existence is open for debate? No, not even the worst of the worst nations like Iran, China, Russia and North Korea, Syria etc.
I agree it's extremely stressful to be Jewish right now. Depressing? I am proud to be Jewish but wish it wasn't so difficult. What makes me feel less stressed is Israel's existence. If things get worst, I will be leaving America. Thank G-d for Israel.
I’ve been thinking for the last couple of years that calling someone a Zionist today is the fashionable, socially acceptable way of calling a Jewish person — any Jewish person! — a kike.
PS: I have a progressive friend who likes to quote Noam Chomsky and the Intercept whenever I post about Israel. He is not antisemitic in the old-fashioned sense, but very much subscribes to the Zionism is apartheid/colonialist/genocidal lies.
He’s the kind of guy who volunteers with refugees and is a great dad and husband. All of the things Andrew writes about in this post are absorbed by this friend and his friends.
I directly asked him recently whether that was all Facebook was showing him of my posts, nothing about other aspects of my life. Just this. Because every time I post about the war, he would chime in with his genocidal libels.
So much of this hatred is algorithmically driven! I’ve taken to changing these posts to “except _____.”
Andrew, it is surreal how articulate you are in explaining this phenomenon of darkness. But more than anything, it is surreal how passionate you are in defending the Jewish people. You are truly a Righteous Among The Nations! 🙏🙏🙏
It's not quite that bad yet in the United States. I think the reason is because we have an extremely large population a great amount of whom are resistant to propaganda. Americans have a strong individualist streak and hate being told what to do or what to think. These Marxist/Islamist types though are taking over the Democratic party which is a cause for great concern. In Britain it is quite different as welll as the rest of Western Europe and I fear for its future.
Excellent and depressing also frightening report, it should frighten non Jews too. So appalled and saddened, how easy it has been to rekindle ancient and recent anti semitism via astounding disinformation. Just re read Jake Wallis Simon's Israelophobia to remind myself of the history.
Once again, through myself, the Church, in the words of the well-known declaration Nostra Aetate, 'deplores the hatred, persecutions and displays of anti-Semitism directed against the Jews at any time and by anyone.' I repeat, 'By anyone.'
Pope John Paul II
In ponerological terms anti-semitism is the root of evil and contrary to agathology (the study of good) and soteriology (the study of salvation). A specific application of ponerology is in political science, where "political ponerology" explores how evil manifests and is utilized within political systems. Many evil political ideologues are using the war in Gaza as a “useful idiot” to further their own agendas.
All of them stem from the same root and all are intrinsically evil.
There need to be ever changing highly visible electronic walls of shame, perhaps in New York and London and Paris and Madrid and Auckland and Cape Town, where vile antisemites are called out and identified! We could start with the barman in the fancy hotel! Report him, shame him and for the love of HASHEM have him fired permanently at the exact moment when he dares to ask anyone if the person is a ZIONIST!
But the Government is showing few signs (albeit a few) of being like Hitler and wishing to organise the State against us. Though I take your point - only too much!

Agree, sadly. However, we also have many supporters. A non-Jewish colleague with no axe to grind was as horrified as I was by Glastonbury and the BBC.

What would be the best response to the barman at the Three Crowns?

To say "Yes."
I’d say:
“Do you know Nick Mackenzie? I ask as he is the CEO of Greene King the business that owns this pub. I think his email address is:
nickmackenzie@greeneking.co.uk.
Now then, tell me, is it company policy to offend customers with an anti-Semitic attitude or is this something you just decided to do yourself?”

I hope you’re right about USA but the hate groups are revving up.

There’s an old saying in an old book and to paraphrase and simplify in contemporary English curse us at your own peril.
